Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica is one of the most critically acclaimed anime of all time, so I decided to try it out. I went into it thinking that it would be a cute magical girl show. I couldn't have been more wrong.
I will be splitting this review into the five categories of Story, art, sound, character, enjoyment and my overall scores.
Story
Madoka magica is a story of Magical girls fighting evil witches, and it asks the question "What is a magical girl?" and it explains the tragic truth of being a magical girl. Madoka has to make the choice of whether to be a magical girl or not. Many people have called this show a deconstruction of the magical girl genre, though you could also call it a darker take on the genre. It was written by Gen Urobobuchi, who created things like psycho pass and fate/zero.
Art
This show has very misleading art, it was made to look innocent so that everybody could be shocked when it started to get dark in episode three. It also tried something I haven't seen before, the witches and witch labyrinths. They used real pictures, which made the witches look like collages (You can probably tell that I'm struggling to describe it, just watch the show).
Sound
Just like what they did with the art, this show mislead us with the opening, they made this show look cute and innocent with the opening "Connect" by ClariS. They did the same with the ending for the first two episodes, but then changed the ending to "Magia" by Khalafina, which was previously only used for fights.
Characters
Gen Urobochi himself said that the character were secondary to the story, but I still quite liked them. We had the main character Madoka, a stereotypical MC at first, but became more developed when she learned the truth behind the magical girls. Homura was my favourite character, because of her development in the tenth episode, you got to see her back story and why she acts the way she does. Halfway through the show The character Kyoko was introduced, and she seemed to have opposite ideas to Sayaka, who was interested in self sacrifice for others, but in the end, we learned that she was always more interested in self sacrifice than Sayaka.
Enjoyment
I really enjoyed this show, mainly because it surprised me. The way they started the show made it look so much nicer than it actually was, and it made me cry like a baby at the end.
Overall
Don't judge a book by its cover. Watch this anime now.
10 / 10
(Wow this review was way shorter than my last one, it's so much easier to talk about stuff I hate than it is to talk about stuff I like)
